5 Thriller Openings - Louise Holman



Sound
-Diagetic sound – overwhelming sound of the sea crashing on the shore - confusion
-Sound track – children appear the music changes - high pitch piano - peaceful sound
-Long sustaining note -  eerie atmosphere

Camera Work
-Slow tilt up which - revealing the man - You don’t see his entire face - creates tension.
-Low angles on the man sitting down - authority - audience feel intimidated.

Mise en Scene
-Lighting – ambient lighting - overpowering sun - man becomes blurred - intimidating.
-Body language - vulnerable - hunched over.

Editing
-Slow pace – transitions - straight cuts
-Takes - long -  suspense within the audience


Sound
            -Dialogue – conversation between group of men
            -External sound – urban sounds e.g. cars etc - realism
            -Diagetic sound – glasses and plates clashing, other people talking
-Non-diagetic sound – voice over – leads into sountrack
Mise en Scene
-Familiar setting – café – exploring the characters
            -Most in suits and ties – business, official 

Camera Work
-Dolly – track round everyone – establishing who’s there
-OTS – depth of field – shoulder blurred, focus on face – secretive (hiding behind someone)
-Eye level - realism

Editing
-Straight cuts
-Very long takes – realism – lulls audience in to a calming state


Sound
            -Diagetic sound – urban sound – traffic, police sirens. Foreshadows future events.
-Sound bridge – dialogue – links shots together of the dead body to the detective talking, and the  external sound keeps continuity – can hear it inside, and when they step outside, it get’s louder.
     
Mise en Scene
-Dark lighting – creates shadows – gloomy atmosphere
-Metal bars on wall outside – image of being caged in
-Dim lighting suggests mood, early morning
-Tidy but homely – has lots of ornaments – items have their own places

Camera Work
-Close up’s  on items – importance – gives audience information
-Slow tilt on dead body – builds up tension
-Low angles – suggests authority – power
 
Editing
-Fades used for transitions – suggests time has passed but still in same place
-Pace – slow – long takes are used at the scene of the crime – realism



Sound
-Voice over – non-diagetic – narrative, the voice describes what’s going on in the scene, it turns into
diagetic sound (dialogue)
 -Soundtrack – use of piano and brass instruments creates a seductive atmosphere

Mise en Scene
-The women is wearing a red dress and red lipstick – signifies danger, passion and seduction (only thing
in colour) – contrast. Portrays that it is important. 
 -The man is in a black suit – creates a sinister atmosphere
 -Back lighting and key lighting used – outlines the man and creates harsh shadows – Mysterious atmosphere

Camera Work
-Many close ups – facial features important – reaction from spoken dialogue
-Shot reverse shot – conversation
-Medium shot used on lighter - connotations of death - smoking kills - he gives it to her - foreshadows him killing her later.
-Tracks in slowly - she realises he knows something – shows reliasation

Pulp Fiction

Sound
-Soundtrack - piano playing in background softly - contrapuntal - the conversation is about robbing the restaurant, which is something that is not represented as being calm. 
-Diagetic sound - cafe setting - sound of people chattering and cups ect. Calm atmophere.
-Loud foley effect of the gun being slammed onto the table - makes the audience jump - contrast to quite sounds.


Mise en Scene
-The women's clothes consist of light colours which suggests that she haa a nice personality and this contrasts with her tone of voice when she shouts
-The man wears a beach shirt which creates irony - the situation - no one would expect someone in casual clothes to rob something


Camera Work
-Close up of gun - suggests importance of future events - sight of weapon creates tension.
-Close up of the women - focus her facial features - eyes squinted/smirk - sinister - suggests evil
tone.
-The mans lagre gestured movements - suggests he's crazy - foreshadows future events.

Editing
-Pace - towards the end - more straight cuts, quicker takes - suggests an important event is about to
take place.

  1. Good analysis Loiuse - succinct, to the point.

    To improove it, embed the video openings, and embed some screen grabs of those key points that you are analysisng - not all of them, rather a smattering. Very encouraging and into level 4 (LOW), but to get high level 4, do the above a swell.
