Vertigo
- Names placed on body parts, e.g. on the eye
- A symbol of vertigo is added to the eye – artistic element and evokes that feeling of vertigo
- The symbol grows bigger and the eye disappears – suggests that it is overwhelming
- The names are then aligned to the right, in white writing – all in capital letters – this is done for clarity for the audience
- Other symbols are used – patterns which move – optical illusions – relates with the title
- Loud, orchestral music is used to give it a sense of suspense
- Towards the beginning, the soundtrack is quiet and when a name appears on the face, the music grows loud with a sudden jolt
The Orphanage
The titles are revealed by a childs arm ripping of the wall paper from a black screen. - This suggests that the film itself has something to reveal; there is a secret- A symbol which is non diagetic sound is used when the text is revealed to create anticipation for the audience.
- The text is simple; white and normal text
Orchestral music is used; piano, strings and woodwind. It creates a creepy atmosphere which makes the audience tense.- A shadow of a hand is on the titles and this suggests a sense of control.
Misery
- The titles in this clip are typically red which have connotations of danger and this is foreboding
- The diegetic sound is used to make it contrapuntal with the text as the music is jazz. Jazz music is usually cheery and this then makes the audience think why there is such a contrast.
- The lettering is shadowed which makes it stand out
- On the titles, there are chips in it which gives it a damaged sense, this is also foreboding as it can be linked with broken or dead images.
